I went walking around my suburb with me camera recently so I could capture some of my favourite things.
One of the best things about my suburb is the variety. There are so many contrasts. It's inner city living at it's best with a combination of quaint cottages, modern town houses and commercial buildings.
I think this picture shows the sort of contrast I'm talking about. A period style home next to a modern townhouse.
I walk past this house almost daily and I am yet to figure out where else the pedestrians could go besides where the arrows point.
Apparently Mary McKillop lived here.
There's lots of graffiti in the more commercial areas of the suburb. Not all of it is ugly though. I actually really like some of the big colourful street art.
Because the suburb is old, all the wires are above ground. It's rather unsightly, but you just get used to seeing these sorts of things.
Victorian terraced houses are a feature of inner city Melbourne.
Many of the individual houses or whole terraces have names
Even though the houses are essentially the same, the owners make them stand out with different paint or porch decorations.
I really like this house. It has a scrappy and run-down look on the outside, but the fresh paint on the door and the new shutters suggest that it is lived in and that the owners are keeping the character of the building.
There was a row of agapanthas that I thought looked really striking up against the surroundings.
There are lots of little laneways in the suburb, like these two examples.
I found a cute red Triumph parked on the side of the road and couldn't resist taking a photo of that.
Here are some of the other houses that I like the feel/look of...
This is a gorgeous old 2-storey brick Victorian.
I think this used to be a pub or a corner store. It has that sort of look to it.
This window looked out on a jungle of pot plants. I guess it's more attractive than a tin fence.
I liked all the iron work and the reflection in the mirror glazed window.
An interesting finish on a modern townhouse.
This house is covered in ivy. It's like a touch of English countryside in Melbourne.
The vine on this house is wisteria. The purple of the flower looks fantastic against the green of the house. Unfortunately it's no longer in flower, so you'll just have to imagine it.
I really love the contrast in the textures here. The wooden fence with the plants against it and the very modern concrete and render building behind.
I really like the detail in this window and door, but I couldn't decide if I preferred the colour or the black and white.
Again, I couldn't decide if I preferred the colour or black and white of this cute little weatherboard.
It's Christmas time so the jacaranda trees are in flower. They look great against the weatherboards.
A row of different types of verandahs.
There are lots of roses in flower in the suburb. I liked the red of this climbing rose against the red brick of the house.
There are some houses in a state of disrepair. This one looks like it's being demolished. I'm not sure if they're planning on keeping the original frontage. I think it looks like it took the no standing sign a bit too literally. Haha!
And to finish off, here are some walls, fences and doors that I like the look of.

I enjoyed seeing those pictures. You live in a very interesting area. It's a good thing Brilly has already clarified for me what pot plants are, or I'd think you were referring to marijuana.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to do shots like that around where I am, only I don't live where one can just walk around. There is too much traffic. One of my rental houses is in an area with older architecture where people can walk around (but wuold have to worry about being mugged).
