The Transformation of the Courtyard

When we bought the house, the back garden (courtyard) was full of lillypilly trees. I guess they were planted as a screen to soften the back wall and shield the space from the neighbours. However, years of neglect meant that the trees were overgrown and thus blocked out all sunlight. Here's a picture of the garden before we moved in.

The trees outside the kitchen window were the first things to go. I like natural light while I'm cooking!!

The rest of the trees followed soon afterwards.

The next step in the revival of the courtyard was the building of the deck. Up until now, Paul and I had managed almost on our own (with the help of family and friends). But we decided that a professional was required for the deck.

We'll plant herbs in the planter box and succulents in the boxes on the wall. We're having a landscaper come through soon to add the finishing touches.

  3. Wow! That looks fantastic!! The transformation is amazing - doesn't look like the same space!!
You and Paul must be rapt! And Myf looks content :)
Is that the only outdoor space?

  4. Wow! What a difference. Do you own the wall that you've hung planters on? It looks very peaceful. Your dogs seem impressed, too.

Will the plants on the wall cascade down and form a wall of green?

  5. Thanks. We're really happy with how it's turned out so far.

Angela, the wall is our back fence - the other side is a carpark, so I guess it's just like any other fence.

We're thinking we'll do a combination of upright and cascading plants down the wall.

Alycia, the space where I stood to take the first two of the final photos is currently dirt. We're going to keep that "dog friendly", but we're hoping the landscaper will help us make it pretty too.

Fi, yes it is our only outdoor space. We have a small patch of garden out the front, but it's not enclosed. There's also a balcony outside our bedroom, but it's pretty useless in terms of outdoor space.

I forgot to mention that the top of the bench opposite the bbq is on hinges so we can store garden things inside it.
